Think Toy Safety During the Holiday Season
December 6th, 2005Millions of toys will find their way into homes during the holiday season. Unfortunately, these toys may be associated with thousands of injuries each year–some of which result in death. Children ages 4 and under are especially at risk for injury from toys. The leading cause of toy-related death is choking. Other injuries occur from falling, strangulation, burning, drowning and even poisoning.
Jennifer Northway, injury prevention program manager for Methodist Healthcare, is available for interviews on toy safety. She can discuss the importance of age appropriateness and alert parents about toys with sharp edges, sharp points, small parts, cords and strings and toys that make loud noises. With advance notice, Northway can be interviewed in the toy department of a local store to illustrate her points or assemble a selection of toys to show.
