Methodist Heart Services promotes heart disease awareness among women by sponsoring the Go Red for Women campaign

Methodist Heart Services is this year’s health care sponsor of the local American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign. The Go Red for Women initiative takes heart-health education to the next level by broadening women’s awareness of their risk for heart disease and arming them with preventive strategies to reduce their risk.

Methodist’s partnership with the American Heart Association is long-standing, since heart disease is so prevalent in our community:

  • Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in San Antonio.
  • According to the 2004 Bexar County Statistical Health Report,
almost 2,000 women died from heart disease, while almost 200 died from
    breast cancer.
  • In Bexar County, 635 of the women who died suddenly from heart disease in 2004 displayed no previous symptoms.
  • Heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.
  • For the past four years, diseases of the heart have been the No. 1 killer of all segments of the Bexar County population.
  • Last year, women in Bexar County led men in the number of deaths by heart disease and stroke.

Awareness is the key to reducing these statistics. Every day Methodist Heart Services works to increase awareness through our dedicated heart Web site (www.SAHEART.net), health fairs, HeartCheck e-newsletters, educational materials, wellness programs, Cardiac Connections educational seminars and now through our efforts in the Go Red for Women campaign.

Methodist Heart Services is proud to sponsor the Go Red for Women campaign along with the American Heart Association, H-E-B and San Antonio Woman magazine. For more than 40 years, Methodist Healthcare has been the leader in the treatment of heart disease in the south Texas region. When it comes to matters of the heart, we offer top technology, staff and physician expertise, and quality patient care for the children and adults of San Antonio and south Texas.
