Methodist Cancer Center*

The Methodist Cancer Center at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital offers an arsenal of equipment for the delivery of radiation therapy. It is able to treat all types of cancers, bringing hope and relief to thousands of people in the San Antonio and South Texas area. In 1997, the Cancer Program at Methodist Hospital received a three-year accreditation by the American College of Surgeons, its sixth since 1981.

Among the advanced technology offered by the Methodist Cancer Center is the Gamma Knife Center at Methodist Hospital. Opened in March of 1998, the Gamma Knife treats internal head abnormalities by delivering a precise, single dose of radiation to a targeted lesion with little, if any, radiation dosage to the surrounding normal tissue and non-invasively. The Gamma Knife Center at Methodist Hospital is the only one of its kind in San Antonio and South Texas.

Another area of technological advance offered the Methodist Cancer Center is the computerized planning process for bracytherapy, a treatment technique used for prostate cancer. This system increases the accuracy of placement of radioactive seeds for treatment, and providing a quicker start of treatment.

Methodist Cancer Center is the only private facility in South Texas with the new generation of radiosurgery device that delivers a detailed combination of robotics and image-guidance treatment to administer exact doses of radiation.
